New Director of Studies at D-ITET

As of 1 February 2024, Prof. Christian Franck will take over the position of Director of Studies from his predecessor Prof. Sebastian Kozerke. The new incumbent is looking forward to the role and explains: "As a lecturer, I ensure that I plan and deliver individual lectures successfully. In my role as Director of Studies, it is now my job to ensure an optimal learning environment and experience for students on both Bachelor's and Master's levels."

Honouring Yann LeCun: Benjamin Grewe Speaks at the 2023 Global Swiss AI Award Ceremony

On the occasion of the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2024 in Davos, AI pioneer Yann LeCun, VP & Chief AI Scientist at Meta, was awarded the Global Swiss AI Award 2023. Jury member Prof. Benjamin Grewe, representing the ETH AI Center as Head of the Neural Learning and Intelligent Systems Group at the Institute of Neuroinformatics at ETH Zurich, gave the laudatory speech and provided background information and rationale for the AI jury's decision.
An architect of nano power plants: SNSF portrait of Mickaël Perrin

Prof. Mickaël Perrin, group leader at Empa and assistant professor of quantum electronics, uses graphene ribbons to build nanoscale power plants that convert waste heat from electrical devices into electricity. He and his research are featured in a portrait by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
Silver medal for PBL’s autonomous racing team ForzaETH at CES in Las Vegas

Members and undergraduate students of the Center for Project-Based Learning D-ITET (PBL) secured a prestigious second place in the Indy autonomous race simulation at the tech event CES in Las Vegas. ETH’s team was only surpassed by the experienced PoliMove team from Politecnico di Milano. An exceptional and very promising achievement for the future. Congratulations!

The DISCO group's "Stable Dinner Party Seating Arrangements" wins the best paper award at WINE 2023. The paper studies avoiding conflict when seating your guests at the dining table.
Mosaic: a novel neuromorphic artificial neural network circuit architecture

Filippo Moro, Yigit Demirag, Giacomo Indiveri, and Melika Payvand from the Institute of Neuroinformatics (INI) of ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich introduced a new hardware Architecture called the Mosaic. It is inspired by the small-world connectivity of the brain, with significant power reduction for routing information on Neuromorphic systems. Their study was recently published in the journal "Nature Communications".
Best Paper Award for Institute of Neuroinformatics

Junren Chen, doctoral student at the Institute of Neuroinformatics (INI), won the Best Paper Award at the 2023 30th IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits and Systems (ICECS) in collaboration with colleagues at the School of Integrated Circuits, Tsinghua University in Beijing.
