H-Watch: Smart watch to recognize Covid-19 symptoms

Students and staff from the Center for Project-Based Learning at D-ITET (PBL) have designed and developed a smart watch which can help to detect a Covid-19 infection. The AI-enhanced “H-Watch” works based on an open connected platform and monitors Covid-19 infection symptoms, such as cough, heart rate, blood oxygenation, fatigue and skin temperature.

In order to detect Covid-19 cough symptoms, the device has been trained to recognize coughs using an open dataset collected by the University of Cambridge. The PBL project, done in collaboration with the IIS group (Prof. Luca Benini), has been partially funded by the EOSC (European Open Science Cloud) secretariat in the framework of a fast track co-creation funding programme for Covid-19 projects.

H-Watch can also be connected to the global network and be helpful for contact tracing using the compact information from its multi-sensors. The watch itself has computing abilities, so only relevant information is communicated. Thus, it needs less power and protects the privacy of the owner. With the help of human body harvesting techniques, the watch can be worn for several weeks without recharging.
