Preparations

The following is a chronological checklist for the preparation of the doctoral examination at D-ITET (with no claim to completeness).

Defining the examination date, the examiners, and the thesis topic

An approximate date of the doctoral examination must be known around six months ahead in time, please discuss this with the examiner to avoid scheduling conflicts (e.g., lectures).

Co-examiners must be approved by the department’s doctoral committee. The examiner (main supervisor) submits a request with a short statement to the , this includes the doctoral student’s name, the title of the thesis and the name of the co-examiner with his/her academic titles and current university/institution.

Note that the doctoral committee meets irregularly (see upcoming dates) and that the request must be made by the examiner (main supervisor) no later than three months before the examination date.

Co-examiners travelling to ETH from outside the ETH Domain will be compensated by the supervisor.

Confirmation of acquired credits for doctoral studies
Doctoral students are kindly requested to fill out step 1 of the Download registration form (PDF, 725 KB) and confirm the credits obtained during his/her doctoral studies (min. 12 ECTS) with the D-ITET doctoral administration as early as possible.

Note (for students having joined before January 1, 2022): Credits from additional requirements to the admission cannot be counted.

Submit the thesis to your supervisor (examiner) and the co-examiner(s) – so they are given enough time to read it and submit their reports in time – and the .

Agree on an exact examination date with the examiner and the co-examiner(s) and notify the of the desired date and the exact time at least 6 weeks before the exam.
(If the examination date is registered late, the doctoral candidate must look for a chairperson him/herself. This should be a full ETH professor at D-ITET who is not affiliated to the same institute.)

Note: Virtual doctoral exams are technically supported by the Multimedia Services. To ensure scheduling, please fill in this form.

  2. A copy of your thesis title page (PDF) as described in the Download Template of doctoral thesis title pag (PDF, 128 KB)

Do not forget to:

  • have the supervisor communicate the names of the co-examiners to the at very latest three months before the examination date;
  • fix a date for the doctoral exam 6 weeks before the examination date;
  • register for the examination with the 15 working days before the examination date;
  • have the expert’s reports (both the examiner’s and the co-examiners') sent to the no later than 10 working days before the examination date (an electronic version is sufficient).
