Hans Eggenberger Prize 2018 to Dr. Christian Haffner

Dr. Christian Haffner, postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Electromagnetic Fields of Prof. Juerg Leuthold, was awarded the Hans Eggenberger Prize 2018 for his dissertation "Non-resonant and Resonant Surface Plasmon Polariton Modulator for Optical Communications".

During his PhD, Christian Haffner worked on new hardware for the transmission of data, which can handle the ever larger data streams with less energy consumption, in a smaller space and at much faster speeds. This is done by exchanging classical electro-optical components with plasmon components. These "resonant plasmonic converters" allow sustainable communication with light in order to meet the demand for ever larger data volumes in the future without wasting precious resources.
