D-ITET PBL smart sensors study seating behaviour in Zurich

Together with ewz and the Center for Project-Based Learning at D-ITET (PBL), the Civil Engineering Office of the City of Zurich is testing newly developed sensors on Vulkanplatz and Münsterhof. They should provide information about how the chairs on the squares are used. If the sensors prove themselves, they could be used in the future for planning public spaces.

The D-ITET Center for Project-Based Learning has designed a novel smart sensor to monitor seating behaviour, usage and localization of public chairs in the city of Zurich. The novel sensors have been designed as a flagship project by undergraduate students during their Bachelor’s thesis or semester projects. The flagship projects were one of the goals planned under the Future Learning Initiative by ETH Zurich.

The sensor node has been designed with state-of-the-art low-power sensors and processors respecting both privacy and energy efficiency.
