Machine Learning Engineer Intern

What the intern will work on
The role is the matching engine itself:
- Turning free-text briefs into structured requirements (service, budget, industry, location)
- Ranking agencies against a brief, and measuring whether the ranking was any good
- Embeddings and semantic search over agency profiles and past projects
- Offline evaluation — building the loop that shows whether a change helped
Requirements
- Python, with working knowledge of pandas, scikit-learn and PyTorch (or equivalents)
- Hands-on experience with NLP, embeddings, or recommender / ranking systems – coursework and personal projects count
- Able to read a paper and ship a small working version of it
- Enough SQL to pull their owndata
- English is sufficient; Turkish is not required

Implementing Optimizations for Climate and Weather Simulations on GPUs

Accurate climate prediction is an indispensable tool to prepare for an inevitably warming earth. Meanwhile, precise weather forecasting impacts our every-day lives, sometimes to a great extent when extreme weather warnings prevent real casualties (e.g., rapid flooding or heat waves). Hence, external page MeteoSwiss—Switzerland’s Federal Office for Meteorology and Climatology—deploys daily simulations using the external page ICON modelling framework at external page 1 km and 2.1 km resolution. While such high-resolution simulations provide the necessary accuracy, they come at a hefty computational cost necessitating an expensive GPU setup. The performance critical component largely consists of stencil computations solving the Navier-Stokes equations governing the atmosphere. In a joint project, DYNAMO and MeteoSwiss have set out to optimize this component enabling further improvements to MeteoSwiss’s forecasting systems. DYNAMO is seeking a motivated intern to support the project in software development. These optimizations are currently being defined, after which they have to be implemented with high code-quality and reliability for MeteoSwiss’s operational requirements including additional consolidation. The goal is to have the optimizations ultimately merged into the external page GT4Py and external page DaCe compilers.
While the prerequisites may seem quite high, we are mainly looking for a candidate with good learning abilities and an open mindset (hiring for aptitude over knowledge). The intern will receive a lot of support by various experienced engineers, and the climate and weather community is warm and welcoming :)
