Bodies and Committees

Below you can find a compilation of all bodies and committees of the department, and their respective members.

Department level

The Department Conference is the highest governing body of the department and determines the department's scientific and academic strategy and orientation. The Department Conference nominates or elects the Department Executive Board and members of other bodies and committees, decrees the procedural rules (PDF, 145 KB) of the department and guidelines concerning the distribution of the budget. A detailed compilation of its duties and responsibilities can be found in the Organisationsverordnung of the ETH Zurich (Art. 46) and in the procedural rules.

Members:

  • all full, associate and assistant professors of the department
  • a total of two further representatives of the lecturers (titular professors, private lecturers and authorized teachers)
  • a total of nine representatives of the middle management of the department (assistants, research assistants and doctoral students)
  • a total of five representatives of the students
  • a total of two representatives of the technical and administrative staff of the department
  • affiliated and accredited members of the department

The Professors' Conference is composed of all full, associate, assistant professors of the department.

The duties and responsibilities of the Professors' Conference are described in the Organisationsverordnung of the ETH Zurich (Art. 49) and in the procedural rules. They include proposals for the appointment and promotion of associate to full professors and for awarding the titles of professor and honorary doctorate. In addition, the Professors' Conference prepares subjects for the Department Conference and discusses teaching assignments with regard to staffing.

The Grading Conference takes place after the end of the examination session. It assesses the performances in all examinations based on the proposals of the examiners and it is chaired by the Director of Studies.  

The Grading Conference is composed of all examiners involved in first year examinations and examination blocks, as well as student observers.

The Doctoral Committee is composed of at least three full, associate or assistant professors and is responsible for the admission of doctoral candidates, the approval of research plans and co-examiners as well as for the nominations for doctoral awards. Its members are elected by the Department Conference for a period of two years.

The Teaching Committee comments on a regular basis on study-related matters and requests necessary changes of study regulations from the Department Conference. It plans the mid- and long-term objectives of courses and settles issues concerning Bachelor and Master subjects.

The Teaching Committee is composed of four representatives of each of the following: the professors of the department, the academic staff and the students.

ETH level

The Teaching Commission is an advisory body of the Executive Board. In the context of the development of ETH Zurich as a university, it is responsible for managing the innovation of teaching and learning in the educational division.

The focus of the Teaching Commission is to support teaching innovation and projects in the framework of Innovedum.

Members from D-ITET:

The Lecturers' Conference (KdL) is composed of six members of the General Conference of the Faculty Members, one representative from each department, and the Rector. It advises the Executive Board on all matters which concern the faculty as a whole and represents faculty interests, e.g. by issuing position statements on consultation issues.

The selection committee for an appointment is constituted by the President of ETH Zurich, who also elects the chair of the committee; this person is the so-called Delegate for Faculty Appointment Procedures (DPB).

At D-ITET, Prof. Helmut Bölcsckei has taken over this role.

The Commission on good scientific practice is an advisory commission of the Executive Board of ETH Zurich. It supports the Executive Board in assuming their responsibility in matters of good scientific practice.
