Anton Gunzinger was born in Welschenrohr in 1956. Completed his degree in electronic engineering at the ETH Zurich in 1983. His Ph.D. dissertation, accepted in 1989, involved parallel graphic processing. For this work, he received several awards: In 1986, ETH Zurich awarded him its Innovation Prize. In 1989, he received the Seymour Cray Prize Switzerland. Anton Gunzinger also won the -Technology Location Switzerland- competition and received the De-Vigier Prize for founding his own company.



As a Senior Assistant at the ETH Zurich, together with other team members, he built the MUSIC system, which, competing with contestants from Intel, Cray, Thinking Machines and IBM, reached the finals of Supercomputing 1992 for the Gordon Bell Award. This system was distinguished with further awards including the -Promotion Prize of the Foundation Technopark Zurich- (Sponsorship of the Non-Profit Organisation Technopark Zurich) and Third Prize at the Supercomputing Conference, Mannheim. In1993 he founded Supercomputing Systems Ltd. at Technopark Zurich. The goal of his company is to introduce affordable supercomputers to industrial companies. In 1994 Anton Gunzinger was the only Swiss citizen to be named by Time magazine as one of the 100 leaders who will influence the 21st century. 2001 he was awarded the -Entrepreneur of the Year 2001- in the category trade/services.



In 2002 Anton Gunzinger was awarded the title of Professor at the ETH Zurich.
