Simon Gross wins Hans Eggenberger Award
Simon Gross, researcher and former doctoral student at the Institute for Biomedical Engineering, wins the Hans Eggenberger Award 2017 for his doctoral thesis „Advances in High-Field NMR Magnetometry“.
The dissertation reports the development of sensors for extremely precise measurement of strong magnetic fields as used, e.g., in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The new probes are based on the principle of nuclear magnetic resonance and up to 1000-fold more sensitive than previous devices. They permit resolving field variations of few picotesla in backgrounds in the tesla range, enabling novel applications such as non-invasive, real-time recordings from the beating heart in humans as well as a novel mode of observing the magnetism of atomic nuclei.
The Hans Eggenberger Award is awarded annually to excellent young scientists preferentially in the field of interdisciplinary applications of electronics and/or electrical energy technology. The award carries a prize of CHF 10’000. Ensuing research projects are supported up to CHF 100’000.
