Credit System/Grades

The credit system of ETH Zurich is aligned with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) which aims for an Europe-wide recognition of studies to facilitate the mobility of students.

The relevant course work includes all activities, such as attending lectures, excercises and seminars (classroom time plus homework), laboratory courses, independent study, exam preparation and participation in examinations and writing and presenting reports/theses etc. On average, one year of full-time study corresponds to 60 credits. One credit corresponds to a workload of 25-30 hours.

Credits are awarded only if students complete the associated performance assessments (exams/semester performances). No credits are granted for unsatisfactory/failed academic performances. A partial allocation of credits is not allowed.

Grades

The grading system of ETH Zurich ranges from 1.0 (not gradable) to 6.0 (excellent). Sufficient performance is assessed with scores of 4.0 to 6.0, with insufficient grades below 4.0 to 1.0. Half and quarter grades are possible.

The final grade is computed as the weighted average of all the grades listed in the degree request (average grade in case of examination blocks) with the corresponding credits points (ECTS) as weighting.
