Prof. em. Dr. Bernhard Plattner

Bernhard Plattner has been Full Professor of Computer Engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the ETH Zurich since April 1, 1994. His previous appointment as associate professor was from October 1, 1988, following three years as assistant professor at the Institute of Computer Science.

Prof. Plattner was born on June 8, 1950 in Bern. He studied in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the ETH Zurich and did his doctoral work while an assistant at the Institute of Computer Science. Before completing his dissertation - in which he studied methods for the examination investigated of the execution of real-time programs - he was appointed a full-time lecturer for computer science at the Neu-Technikum Buchs in Buchs SG, where he was involved in setting up the new department of computer science. In 1984 he assumed a post as senior research assistant at the University of Zurich. After being appointed assistant professor at the ETH Zurich, he intensified his research work and earned international recognition with publications by his research group. He was also co-author and editor of several books. His research focuses on new architectures, protocols and systems for the Internet and, in general, for computer networks.

Prof. Plattner was a long-term member of the board of directors of the SWITCH Foundation, and as its vice-president was instrumental in bringing the Internet to Swiss universities. As chairman of several program committees, he was responsible for the scientific content of many international conferences. Prof. Plattner is Program Director of ETH World, a strategic program to establish a virtual space for communication and cooperation independent of time and place.

From March 2005 to August 2007, Bernhard Plattner was Vice-Rector for Bachelor/Master studies at ETH Zurich.
