Konstantinos Kanellopoulos joins the MICRO Hall of Fame
Konstantinos Kanellopoulos, doctoral student in the SAFARI Research Group, joins the ACM SIGMICRO MICRO Hall of Fame. The MICRO Hall of Fame recognizes authors who have had eight or more papers published in MICRO. This year’s inductees were announced at MICRO 2024 during the awards ceremony.
Second place at the Asilomar 2024 Student Paper Contest for Gian Marti
Gian Marti, doctoral student at the Integrated Information Processing group, has achieved the second place at the Student Paper Contest of the Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and Computers – for the second year in a row! This year, he participated with the paper "Fundamental Limits for Jammer-Resilient Communication in Finite-Resolution MIMO," which he co-authored with Alexander Stutz-Tirri and Prof. Christoph Studer.

Prof. Laurent Vanbever, Head of the Networked Systems Group, has won the Dandelion Award 2024, which recognises professors for their outstanding commitment to promoting entrepreneurship at ETH Zurich and beyond.

Best Paper Award for Laboratory for High Power Electronic Systems and Levitronix cooperation
Lars Beglinger, doctoral student at the Laboratory for High Power Electronic Systems (HPE) together with colleagues Daniel Steinert and Thomas Nussbaumer from Levitronix GmbH, and Jürgen Biela, HPE head, won the best paper award for their paper "Concept and Design of a Bearingless Spinfilter".
Best PhD Forum Award for Yichao Zhang
Yichao Zhang, doctoral student in the Digital Circuits and Systems group headed by Prof. Luca Benini, has received the Best PhD Forum Award at the VLSI-SoC conference in Tanger, Morocco.
Google gift for Prof. Kaveh Razavi to support excellent research in academia
Google has awarded Prof. Kaveh Razavi, head of the Computer Security Group (COMSEC), an unrestricted gift in the amount of USD 100,000 to support his work in the area of Open Hardware Security.
Awards for outstanding Bachelor’s students
At the Open House Day of the Center for Project-Based Learning (PBL) on 24 September, the "Best BSc Thesis Award" was granted to three outstanding Bachelor’s students at D-ITET. It was handed over to the laureates Jethusan Jeyaruban, Maria Sophie Schnuck, and Max Manuel Wipfli by the prize donors Christophe Beaud, CEO, and his wife Danette Beaud, COO of Peoplefone.
Best Paper Award for Laboratory for High Power Electronic Systems
Thomas Ewald, Florian Krismer and Jürgen Biela received the best paper award at the ECCE Europe 2024, which took place in Darmstadt/Germany on 2-6 September 2024.
Prof. Lana Josipović receives Michal Servit Best Paper Award
Prof. Lana Josipović received, together with collaborators from AMD and EPFL, the Michal Servit Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Field-Programmable Logic and Applications (FPL'24). The paper is titled DynaRapid: Fast-Tracking from C to Routed Circuits. It presents a framework that redefines how we interact with FPGAs and reduces FPGA compilation time to just seconds.
Richard Hahnloser awarded a fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS)
Richard Hahnloser of the Institute of Neuroinformatics (ETH Zurich and UZH) was awarded a prestigious fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) in Princeton. The fellowship for the 2024–25 academic year recognizes the significance of a scholars' work, and it is an opportunity to advance their research and exchange ideas with scholars from around the world.
IEEE TCMM Open Source Hardware Contribution Award for Prof. Luca Benini
Prof. Luca Benini, head of the Digital Circuits and Systems group of the Integrated Systems Laboratory, has received the IEEE TCMM Open Source Hardware Contribution Award at this year's Hot Chips 2024.
APEX 2024 Award for "Publication Excellence"
The Power Electronic Systems Laboratory, headed by Prof. Johann Kolar, were awarded the 2024 APEX Award for Publication Excellence under the category of "New Technology" for their March 2023 cover feature "Monolithic Bidirectional Power Transistors" in IEEE Power Electronics Magazine.
ISCA Best Paper Award
Rahul Bera, doctoral student at the SAFARI Research Group of Prof. Onur Mutlu, and Adithya Ranganathan, Intel Processor Architecture Research Lab, and co-authors received the Best Paper Award at the International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA) 2024 for their joint work “Constable: Improving Performance and Power Efficiency by Safely Eliminating Load Instruction Execution”.
Best paper award at the the 20th Embedded Vision Workshop in Seattle
The paper "Multi-resolution Rescored ByteTrack for Video Object Detection on Ultra-low-power Embedded Systems" coauthored by a ETHZ, UNIBO, IDSIA, KUL team got the best paper award at the the 20th Embedded Vision Workshop in conjunction with the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition held from 17 June 2024 to 21 June 2024 in Seattle, Washington, United States.
Christian Franck received the IEEE DEIS Eric O. Forster Memorial Lecture Award
Prof. Christian Franck, Head of the High Voltage Laboratory, received the award at the 2024 IEEE ICD in Toulouse and held his lecture on “Green Developments in Gaseous Insulation Systems”.
Jean-Claude Laprie Award for seminal RowHammer paper
The SAFARI group, led by Prof. Onur Mutlu, has won the Jean-Claude Laprie Award in Dependable Computing 2024 for their ISCA’14 paper: “Flipping bits in memory without accessing them: An experimental study of DRAM disturbance errors”.
Swiss Telecommunication Award
In its 50th anniversary year, the Swiss Telecommunications Association, asut (https://asut.ch), awarded the Swiss Telecommunications Prize for the second time. The award went to Dr. Gregor Dürrenberger, who was honored for his commitment to the development of mobile communication technologies.
Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards FS 2024
At the end of this semester, the best assistants were awarded the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award FS 2024. The winners are Angelo Nujic (Analysis II) and Philipp Schilk (Embedded Systems).
Andreas Horat received Young Researcher Award at the PCIM 2024
Andreas Horat, doctoral student at the Power Electronic Systems Laboratory headed by Prof. Johann Kolar, received the Young Researcher Award for his paper “Highly-Compact Bearingless Axial-Flux Motor for a Pediatric Implantable Fontan Blood Pump” at PCIM 2024.
Successful week for PBL
Last week, the Center for Project-Based Learning at D-ITET (PBL) won two awards at challenging conferences. Andrea Ronco, Philipp Schilk and Michele Magno won the best demo award at the 9th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Internet of Things Design and Implementation (IoTDI). The other prize was the best paper award at the 75th IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I²MTC) 2024.
Digital Circuits and Systems Group: Best Paper Award at the tinyML Research Symposium 2024
The Digital Circuits and Systems Group, lead by Prof. Luca Benini, received the Best Paper Award at the tinyML Research Symposium 2024. The paper, titled "Boosting Keyword Spotting through On-Device Learnable User Speech Characteristics", was co-authored by Cristian Cioflan and Lukas Cavigelli.
PBL among the three finalists for the KITE Award 2024
The Center for Project-Based Learning D-ITET (PBL) is among the three finalists for the KITE Award 2024. The KITE Award honors particularly convincing teaching innovations and will be presented as part of the Innovation in Learning and Teaching Fair on 15 May.
Kaveh Razavi receives Jochen Lietke Young Researcher Award
Prof. Kaveh Razavi, head of the Computer Security Group, has received the Jochen Lietke Young Researcher Award at EuroSys. This award was created in 2014 by ACM EuroSys to reward junior European researchers who have demonstrated exceptional creativity and innovation in systems research, broadly construed.

Silver medal for PBL’s autonomous racing team ForzaETH at CES in Las Vegas
Members and undergraduate students of the Center for Project-Based Learning D-ITET (PBL) secured a prestigious second place in the Indy autonomous race simulation at the tech event CES in Las Vegas. ETH’s team was only surpassed by the experienced PoliMove team from Politecnico di Milano. An exceptional and very promising achievement for the future. Congratulations!

Prof. Taekwang Jang wins 2024 IEEE SSCS New Frontier Award
Prof. Taekwang Jang, head of the Energy-Efficient Circuits and Intelligent Systems Group, has been honored with the prestigious 2024 IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society New Frontier Award. PBL team won Best Paper Award at ACM ENSYSS 2023 for Innovative IoT Research
Silvano Cortesi, Marco Giordano, and Michele Magno from the D-ITET Center for Project-Based Learning (PBL) received the Best Paper Award at the 11th ACM International Workshop on Energy Harvesting & Energy-Neutral Sensing Systems (ENSYSS) in conjunction with ACM Sensys 2023. Their outstanding paper was entitled "Energy-Aware Adaptive Sampling for Self-Sustainability in Resource-Constrained IoT Devices". Congratulations!

Kanika Dheman, postdoctoral researcher at PBL, claimed the coveted Best Pitch award at IEEE Sensors 2023 in Vienna. Her visionary startup idea "PI Health: Pervasive Intelligence for Organ Failure Detection with Embedded AI in Wearables," stood out among 10 finalists during the conference. Congratulations!
Success for the SAFARI Research Group at the ACM Student Research Competition
The SAFARI Research Group, lead by Prof. Onur Mutlu, was present at PACT 2023 with several presentations at the ACM Student Research Competition (SRC). The ACM SRC is a forum for graduate and undergraduate students to share their research results, exchange ideas, and improve their communication skills while competing for prizes. The top 3 undergraduate and graduate students received awards, and the first-place winner in each category will go on to participate in the SRC Grand Finals.

Electrical engineering pioneer named honorary councillor of ETH Zurich
At this year's ETH Day Wera Hotz Kowner, the first woman to complete a degree in electrical engineering at ETH Zurich in 1963, was named an honorary councillor in recognition of her outstanding services in the promotion of young talent.

Prof. Christian Franck appointed new Full Member of SATW

BioDynaMo simulation engine wins Best Artifact Award at PPoPP 2023
Lukas Breitwieser, his co-authors Ahmad Hesam, Fons Rademakers, Juan Gómez Luna, and Onur Mutlu have received the Best Artifact Award at the Principles and Practice of Parallel Programming (PPoPP) 2023 for their high-performance agent-based simulation engine, BioDynaMo.
Prof. Hua Wang named IEEE ISSCC top contributing author
Hua Wang, Professor of Electronics at the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, was named top contributing author from 1954 to 2023 at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC). ISSCC is the top conference of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society and the most prestigious conference for integrated circuits (IC) research.

David Menzi receives Best Paper Award at IEEE COMPEL 2022
David Menzi's paper has been awarded the Best Paper Award at the Twenty Third IEEE Workshop on Control and Modeling for Power Electronics, COMPEL 2022. Prof. Mehmet Fatih Yanik and his team receive the BRIDGE Discovery Award
Prof. Mehmet Fatih Yanik, head of the Neurotechnology Group of UZH and ETH Zurich, and his team recently developed a novel technology for non-invasive focal drug delivery to the brain circuits using focused ultrasound. The project receives the BRIDGE Discovery Award, funded by SNSF and Innosuisse.

Minesh Patel from the SAFARI research group receives an ETH Doctoral Medal
We’d like to congratulate Minesh Patel on receiving an ETH Doctoral Medal for his outstanding Doctoral thesis. Minesh’s dissertation, "Enabling Effective Error Mitigation in Modern Memory Chips that Use On-Die Error-Correcting Codes" was nominated by D-ITET and will be presented at the Doctoral Awards Ceremony in January 2023.

2022 Google Security and Privacy Research Award
Prof. Onur Mutlu was recently honored by Google with a 2022 Google Security and Privacy Research Award for his work on hardware security and side-channels. This award recognizes the work done by Mutlu and his team, the SAFARI Research Group, for making significant, recent contributions to protecting users across the Internet, especially for their work on the discovery of the DRAM RowHammer vulnerability.

A low power in-ear vital parameter monitoring system by Philipp Schilk, Kanika Dheman, and Michele Magno from the Center for Project-based Learning won the best paper award at the tenth "International Workshop on e-Health Pervasive Wireless Applications and Services 2022 (e-HPWAS'22).

Marco Pocaterra and Dr. Mauro Ciappa from the Integrated Systems Laboratory (IIS) received the Best Paper Award at the 33rd European Symposium on Reliability of Electron Devices and Physics (ESREF 2022) organized by the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft in Berlin from September 26 to 29, 2022.
Tommaso Polonelli and Michele Magno win Best Poster Award
Tommaso Polonelli, Andrea Bentivogli, Guido Comai, and Michele Magno from the Center for Project-Based Learning D-ITET (PBL) won the Best Poster Award for the paper "Self-sustainable IoT Wireless Sensor Node for Predictive Maintenance on Electric Motors" at the IEEE Sensors Applications Symposium 2022 in Sweden.

Three D-ITET graduates have been awarded an ETH Zürich Pioneer Fellowships for their groundbreaking technology innovations for the industry. PeakFlow, developed by Yvan Bosshard and Tiago Salzmann, brings "the Smart to Smart Infrastructure" and is capable of completely self-sustaining operation. Tethys Robotics, co-founded by Pragash Sivananthaguru, enables search, recovery and inspection missions in all waters.
IIS team wins Open-Source HW/SW Award
A mixed team consisting of members of the group of Prof. Luca Benini at the Institute of Integrated Systems and the Università di Bologna has won the Open-Source Hardware/Software Award at the "SAMOS XXII" International Conference on Embedded Computer Systems: Architectures, Modeling and Simulation.
Patrick Jattke receives Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship Europe award
Patrick Jattke, a doctoral student in the Computer Security Group, led by Prof. Kaveh Razavi, has been awarded the prestigious Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship Europe award. Patrick has been selected for his proposal "Rowhammer Meets AI: Leveraging Deep Learning for Building a General Rowhammer Testing Methodology".
Outstanding TA Awards presented for the second time
Last week, the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards for this semester were granted to the best teaching assistants at Bachelor's and Master's level at D-ITET. The winners are Manuel Schneider (Analysis II), Tobias Bühler (Communication Networks), and Nicolas Lanzetti (Game Theory and Control). Congratulations!
Prof. Kaveh Razavi receives federally funded ERC Starting Grant
Prof. Kaveh Razavi, head of the Computer Security group, wants to increase the security of computer hardware and microprocessors with a new approach. To this end, he has subsequently received an ERC Starting Grant. Due to Switzerland's exclusion from funding by the European Research Council ERC, the project is now being funded by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation SERI.
Salvatore Race receives the Young Researcher Award at PCIM 2022
Salvatore Race, doctoral student at the Advanced Power Semiconductor Laboratory, received the Young Researcher Award at the PCIM (Power Conversion and Intelligent Motion) 2022 conference.
Romain Jacob receives BenchCouncil Distinguished Doctoral Dissertation Award
Dr. Romain Jacob, former doctoral student in the Computer Engineering Group and now a postdoctoral researcher in the Networked Systems Group, has received the BenchCouncil Distinguished Doctoral Dissertation Award.
Onur Mutlu and colleagues receive the NVMW Persistent Impact Prize
Onur Mutlu, head of the SAFARI Research Group, and colleagues Benjamin Lee, Engin Ipek, and Doug Burger received the NVMW 2022 Persistent Impact Prize for their 2009 ISCA paper on Architecting Phase Change Memory as a Scalable DRAM Alternative.
Best Paper Award at PCIM 2022
A combined team consisting of the Power Electronic Systems Laboratory and Infineon Technologies received a Best Paper Award for their paper „Next Generation GaN-based Architectures: From 240W USB-C Adapters to 11kW EV On-Board Chargers with Ultra-high Power Density and Wide Output Voltage Range“ at PCIM 2022.
Nominated: High-precision X-rays of breast tissue
Marco Stampanoni, researcher at PSI and Professor at the Institute for Biomedical Engineering, his colleague Dr. Zhentian Wang and their team have been nominated for this year’s European Inventor Award. The two scientists have been conducting research for more than ten years, in the pursuit of improved diagnostic methods for the early detection of breast cancer. The nomination for this prestigious award is in recognition of their pioneering work. The winners will be announced on 21 June 2022.

Neha Nain, doctoral student at the Power Electronic Systems Laboratory, received the Ernst-Blickle Graduate Award 2021 for her outstanding Master's thesis.
KITE Award finalist: IfA's quadrocopter drone video now online
During the lockdown Jeremy Coulson, Paul Beuchat and Prof. John Lygeros from the Automatic Control Laboratory (IfA) developed the course "Quad-Rotors: Control and Estimation" for Bachelor’s students at D-ITET. Their project was nominated as one of three KITE Award finalists as a particularly innovative teaching initiative. Congratulations!
Gregor Dumphart received IEEE WCNC Best Paper Award
Gregor Dumphart, Johannes Sager and Armin Wittneben of the Wireless Communications Group received the Best Paper Award for Track 1 “Physical Layer and Communication Theory” at this year's IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference taking place in Austin, Texas.

Rüdiger Birkner, former doctoral student at the Networked Systems Group (NSG), led by Prof. Laurent Vanbever, just won the EuroSys Roger Needham PhD Award for his PhD thesis "Improving Network Understanding".
Prune Truong is now a 2022 Apple Scholar in AI/ML
Prune Truong, doctoral student at D-ITET's Computer Vision Lab (CVL), receives an Apple Scholars in AI/ML PhD fellowship. The PhD fellowships in Machine Learning and AI were created to celebrate the contributions of students pursuing cutting-edge fundamental and applied machine learning research worldwide.
Taekwang Jang's group receives the 2021 Jan Van Vessem Award
In the 2022 IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), members of the Energy Efficient Circuits and IoT Systems (EECIS) group Alessandro Novello, Gabriele Atzeni, Giorgio Cristiano and Prof. Taekwang Jang received the 2021 Jan Van Vessem Award for the outstanding European paper, together with a collaborator, Mathieu Coustans, of ST Microelectronics.
Prof. Ulrike Grossner elected as IEEE Member-at-Large
Prof. Ulrike Grossner, head of the Advanced Power Semiconductor Laboratory, has been elected as a Member-at-Large (MAL) to the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) Advisory Committee for a three-year term beginning 1 January 2022.
Prof. Onur Mutlu wins Intel's 2021 Outstanding Researcher Award
Prof. Onur Mutlu, head of the SAFARI Research Group, has been selected as one of Intel's 2021 Outstanding Researcher Award winners for his collaborative research on "Efficient Compute-in-Memory Architectures" with Intel.
Bachelor's student wins research competition with self-built Tesla coil
Maz Wegmüller, Bachelor's student at D-ITET, was the only foreign participant in the research competition in Taiwan to win the Young Scientist Award. He was supported in the development of his musical tesla transformer by Raphael Färber, researcher at the High Voltage Laboratory (HVL).
Master's student Joudi Hajar receives GE Impact Award
Joudi Hajar, Master’s student in Robotics, Systems and Control, receives the „GE Impact Award“. Supervised by Prof. Florian Dörfler, she supported the development of a novel tool that designs a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) at the lowest cost possible.
Prof. Daniel Razansky named IEEE Fellow
Daniel Razansky, Professor of Biomedical Imaging at the Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBT) has been named IEEE Fellow for contributions to multispectral optoacoustic tomography. The IEEE Fellow is one of the most prestigious honors of the IEEE, and is bestowed upon a very limited number of Senior Members who have contributed importantly to the advancement of engineering, science and technology bringing significant value to our society.
